Your K-O Network account
Kingswood-Oxford School's campus network connects over 300 devices in a single Microsoft Windows domain. Every student, teacher and staff member is provided with an account on this network. The network uses roaming profiles allowing a user access to their files from any machine on the network. An H: drive is set up for each user as the personal Home Directory and work files should be saved there. Each student is usually allowed 12 MB of network storage space. Larger files should be saved to your Flash Drive. As outlined in our Acceptable Use Policy network and internet use are monitored for signs of possible abuse. All PCs are protected by real-time virus scanning.
All public and teacher PCs use Microsoft Windows XP. When you begin use of a school PC, if it is running and the previous user logged off correctly, you should see the XP Pro "Welcome to Windows" graphic:

Pressing and holding down the Ctrl and Alt keys with one hand while pressing the Delete key with the other will bring up the "Log On to Windows" box. This is where you enter your User name and Password to be authenticated by the server and given access to the network.

Depending on the computer you are using to access the system, the User name: box will be blank, or contain your user name, or the previous user's user name.
Your Network User name and Password
The User name for a student Network account is in the format: lastname.firstinitial.twodigitclassyear (i.e. smith.j.06). [When duplicate accounts occur, we add the first initial of the middle name (i.e. smith.ja.06).] New students' Network Passwords are set at the beginning of each school year to either your birthdate in the form: mmddyyyy or, if we don't have it, 99999999. (Returning students passwords are not reset each year.) For security purposes access to an account is locked out for 30 minutes after three unsuccessful attempts to log on. If your Network Password does not work, please see Mrs. Solomon in the Upper School Library or Mrs. Brodeur in the Middle School Resource Room.

Enter your User name in the User name: box and then your Password in the Password: box. The Log on to: box should already contain the K-O domain name. Then click on Login (or press Enter).
Your First Logon
Your first network logon of a new academic year is different than all the rest.
If your logon is successful you will see a Logon Message Box with the message 'You are required to change your password at first logon.' Click on the OK button.
Now you should see a Change Password box. It has 5 boxes for data. Three of these; User name:, Log on to: and Old Password: will show the data you entered earlier. In the New Password: box, enter the password you want to have (Please make a note of it somewhere!). In the Confirm new password: box re-enter the password you chose exactly as before. When you are done click on the OK button.
Now another, smaller Change Password box will open containg the message: 'Your password has been changed.' Click on OK.
Windows will now load and apply your settings and then start the Scriptlogic program. While Scriptlogic is running a box titled Computer and Network Acceptable Use Agreement will open. You must read the Acceptable Use Policy and click on the I accept button to activate your network account. If you disagree or click on the I decline button your session will end and you will not activate your account or be able to use K-O computer resources.

Regular Network Logons
After you successfuly complete your first Network logon, all others should be 'normal' - you will bring up the Log On to Windows box, enter your User name and Password, click Logon, wait while your settings are loaded and applied and for Scriptlogic to run, and then see the desktop with its icons for the programs on that PC.

When you logon to a K-O computer the icons that show up on the desktop reflect the programs loaded on that particular PC. You can change your desktop, but you can not load or delete programs on any school PC.

Your school Network account includes a personal work space labeled as the H: drive. You can see the contents of this space (drive) at any time by double-clicking on the My Computer icon on the desktop and then double-clicking on the H: drive icon/description in the Network Drives area of the window.

Opening the H: drive will show you a number of folders. Most people save their work in their H: drive Personal folder. Always make sure you have saved your work before logging off and that you know where it was saved.

Logging Off the Network
When you are finished with your work on a school PC you should close the application (program) you were using and log off the Network. First, click on the Windows Start button in the bottom left corner of the desktop:

This will open a window with several choices including Log Off and Shutdown:

Usually you do not need to shut down or power down the PC. However, you should always log off whenever you are finished working at a public PC. Click on the Log Off [your account name] choice and the Log Off Windows box should open.

Click on the Log Off button. Your log on session will end, your network connection will close, your settings will be saved and Windows will return the PC back to the Welcome to Windows box so the next user can log on.
Shutting Down the Computer
Sometimes a previous user, usually while violating terms of the K-O Acceptable Use Policy, will log off the PC but leave it in an unreliable state. In this case, or especially if you are about to work on something that is very important to you, you should shut down the PC and restart it to get a fresh instance of Windows running.
If you select and click on Shut Down instead of Log Off [Your Account Name], the Shut Down Windows box will appear.

This box gives you a choice of options including Log Off and Shut Down. If you select Shut Down and click on the OK button, Windows will end your session, close your network connection, save your settings and then power off the PC. Push the power button to restart the PC and Windows will load and boot and you can then log on.

Please Note: To protect your privacy and the access to your account, make sure you log off after you finish your work on any public PC. Students should also save often and take responsibility for backing up important work by using a Flash Drive or by sending themselves a copy of any important document via email. This will put your document in two locations and protect you from computer problems. Most teachers will not accept "computer problems" as a valid excuse for late or missed work.
